DESCRIPTION:
Farmed salmon is BC's largest agricultural export crop, with annual production volumes of 70-80,000 tonnes in recent years. This volume of product is valued at more than $300 million and the industry directly employs more than 2,800 people in BC's coastal communities. Recently, global farmed salmon production exceeded 1,000,000 tonnes. BC’s salmon industry is expected to expand significantly in the next ten years to eventually support more than 12,000 full-time jobs directly and indirectly.
Aquaculture Technicians work on salmon farms and hatcheries where duties include:

Assisting in the day to day operations of the farm or hatchery.

Feeding aquaculture stocks, preforming water quality analysis, while adhering to biosecurity and fish health protocols.

Operating, maintaining, and repairing automated feeders, boats, and other associated equipment.

Keeping daily records of feed, stock inventory and environmental conditions.

Grading as well as performing health and weight samples of stock.

Preparing aquaculture stocks for market.

Operating boats, forklifts and other types of equipment.
PREREQUISITES (ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS)
- Applicants must provide evidence confirming mature student status (19 years of age or older on first day and out of school for 1 full year), OR if under 19, provide evidence of Grade 12 completion or equivalent
- Applicants must complete an entrance assessment
- Applicants may be subject to an English assessment test
- Applicants must meet with an Admissions Advisor
- Applicants must successfully complete a physical fitness assessment at an approved facility
HOURS OF INSTRUCTION
- 25 weeks (500 hours)
- 460 hours of classroom training, and a 2-week practicum placement.

PRACTICUM (WORK EXPERIENCE)
Students attend a 2-week practicum component near the end of their program. During this time students take the role of employee, work diligently and endeavor to make this a positive experience for themselves, the college and the practicum host. Students will require steel-toed rubber boots and rain-gear for their practicum. Practicum placements may take place in a camp situation.
MARKING (ASSESSMENT)
- Students are assessed on each module of their program by a test, project, assignment or demonstration of skills.
- Students are assessed on professionalism, conduct and attendance.
- Students are assessed on their practicum component.
- An average of all module grades, as well as the grades for professional conduct and attendance is calculated. Successful completion of the program requires a minimum of a 65% average grade, and successful completion of the practicum component.
- The college provides funding for one attempt at each certification or licence listed under Boating, Marine, and Safety Skills. Should a student fail a certification or licence, they may re-take the assessment at their own expense.
