Excel
Career College and Habitat for Humanity show new meaning
to the word Teamwork!
Habitat
for Humanity’s Jon Toogood and Pauline Stevenson,
President
of Excel Career College sign a Memorandum of Understanding, solidifying
the partnership between the two organizations to work together
for the community. With the upcoming Habitat build scheduled to
break ground on May 28th, the two have teamed up to help local
families and ease the skilled labour shortage within the construction
and trades industries.
Excel
Career College, a registered and accredited career college on
Vancouver Island, received approval for a new and exciting program
that will change the face of training in trades and it could not
have come at a better time. The program, Forming, Framing and
Introduction to Finishing will have the students working along
side the Habitat crew and volunteers to build a local home from
the ground up, start to finish. Not only will the students gain
valuable experience in every aspect of the Construction field,
they will also contribute to the local community, benefit from
networking opportunities for future employment, and help build
a legacy that they can view for many years to follow. Students
will also be working with Habitat to build the playhouses used
for fundraising and gain extremely valuable learning opportunities
through their participation in deconstructions
Habitat
for Humanity is an independent, nonprofit, faith-based housing
program dedicated to the elimination of poverty by building homes
in partnership with families in need. The purpose of Habitat is
to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to those who would
not qualify for or be able to afford a conventional mortgage.
The Habitat program is about home ownership designed to break
the poverty cycle. Habitat for Humanity is thrilled to be a partner
in education and recognizes the benefit that the Excel students
will provide.
